Tarot Tip Tuesdays - Doing Tarot Readings At Events Need Not Be Stressful

Whether you are new to Tarot and in the throes of building a connection with your Tarot cards or an advanced Tarot reader diligently honing your Tarot reading skills, I am putting out a Tarot tip a week to help you to consistently make Tarot a part of your everyday life.

Have you ever done or been asked to do Tarot readings at events?  Have you ever felt uncomfortable doing Tarot readings for a big group of people? If your experience doing Tarot readings at events is limited, or you have just recently turned professional as a Tarot reader and are about to get your first taste of doing a Tarot reading at an event,  that would be completely normal.

I was the same when I started out as a professional Tarot reader. I remembered my nervousness, as I shuffled my Tarot cards with sweaty palms at my first big event.  In fact, I even remembered wanting to cancel my engagement with the client about 2 weeks before the event, but thought better of it because it would have reflected so badly on my professionalism.

So here goes your Tarot Tips for this Tuesday if you are planning to do Tarot readings at events:

1) Practice doing Tarot readings in groups by inviting your friends and your friends of friends,  for a mini reading session. This will help you assess the right speed at which the reading is conducted and offer you opportunities to try out  smaller but effective  Tarot spreads suitable for readings at events.

2) Have an indepth discussion with the event host to understand the theme of the event as that will influence how you would dress for it or which Tarot decks you might want to use.  Obtain a high level understanding of  the profile of the guests who will be attending the event.

3) Ensure that there is an agreement on your fees and charges with the event host up front.  Some readers get paid a flat fee according to the duration of the event or the number of guests likely to be obtaining a reading from you. Some readers also get paid a fee and the transport charges on top of that fee.

4) Do a recce of the venue before the event to pick out the perfect spot at which both the event host and you are comfortable with.  Work collaboratively with the event host and be opened to him or her about your need to perform a tarot reading at a spot that is quieter, and set further away from where the guests will be mingling or the band is playing.

5) Create a sacred space within which you will be doing the Tarot readings at the event. You might want to bring your own table cloth, and decorate the table with some crystals perhaps.  I also always cleanse the space with sage incense to ensure that I protect the energy within that space, for the benefit of my querants and I.

6)  Always meditate and ground yourself before the event. This is important as it will help you manage an onslaught of different energies from the numerous querant that you will be reading for at the event.  In fact, throughout the event, you are advised to take regular breaks in between to do the same.

7) Keep the Tarot spread small and simple.  I usually perform a 3-5 card spread when I do Tarot readings at events.  If you decide to overlay Tarot readings with Numerology and Astrology readings as well, then I would suggest that you keep it to a simple 3-card spread. Remember, time is critical because the last thing you want to do is to leave a few guests disappointed just because you had no time to complete the readings.

8)  Although you had been hired to read for the guests at the event, you are permitted to refuse to do a Tarot reading for any of the guests who are drunk, obnoxious, rude or behaving badly in any other way.  Do not get intimidated by anyone and always be open and honest with the event host should you feel uncomfortable in any way.

9). Have a glass of water beside you throughout the duration that you are doing the Tarot readings as your energy levels will slowly wane and you will be very thirsty from all that intense conversations you will be having with the querants.

10) Have a light meal before the event, just enough to sustain your energy levels. I always have plenty of fruits and water before performing Tarot readings at events.  You are advised not to have any alcohol during the readings even when offered by the event host or the guests.  Even a single glass of wine could affect your clarity of thought when you read for your querants.

11) You are permitted to enjoy yourself as much as the guests at the event.  Have fun, lighten up and use that opportunity to give out name cards, build your leads and get to know as many people as possible.

Lastly, I took the liberty to gather some more tips from my fellow tarotists.  Some good ones include:
- keeping a bottle of water with you at all times so you can rehydrate frequently,
- bringing along your own table cloth,
- keepingsome clever, light-hearted one-liners up your sleeves for difficult situations like when a querant is skeptical,
- taking a wee piece of cardboard along with you just in case the table has a wonky leg (I do dislike doing a Tarot readings over a jiggly table).

Thank you Bonnie Cehovet and Karen Sealey for adding your words of wisdom to my list of Tarot Tips for this Tuesday.

May your Tarot cards provide you with a full deck of possibilities throughout your day.

  1. Great list Joanna! The first big event is daunting... it's a bit like stage fright! But soon overcome :) I think Point 7 - keep your spread small and simple - is a very important tip.

  2. Agreed! Small spreads are best and is still providing detailed reading. 3-cards more than enough :) xx
