An Invitation To Tea - My Conversation With Bruce Lee

PREVIOUS BLOG   | MASTER LIST      |   NEXT BLOG

Remembering Our Ancestors At Samhain

I wrote this blog post as my contribution to the Samhain 2014 Tarot Blog Hop.  To my blog readers who do not know what Samhain is, it is a Gaelic festival  celebrated on 31 October, that marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the winter when days get shorter, and  darker quite quickly and the weather gets colder.

At Samhain, the veil between worlds are said to be thinner as  it was a day that ancestral spirits were thought to  return to visit the homes of their living families. That was the reason why many called it the Day of the Dead and anyone who celebrated the festive revelry at Halloween with all the ghoulie costumes and morbidly shaped candy, would hopefully understand why, beyond these, and the “Belladonna Beefeater Gin Cocktails” and “Vampire’s Vodkatini”, that this festival was actually a very meaningful one for those who valued the importance of kinship and respect for our ancestors that had passed on.

 An Invitation To Tea

As a Catholic,  I celebrate All Saints’ Day on 1 November and All Souls’ Day on 2 November.  Every year, Mum would visit the memorial niche of grand dad at the church at which his remains had been placed, and she would lay some flowers, wiped the surface of the niche and said a silent prayer to remember grand dad.  As the certified weirdo of the family, beyond saying my prayers to remember the family members that had passed on, I would also leverage my intuitive gifts to have a conversation with them. So it was very apt that the wrangler of this year’s Samhain Tarot Blog Hop, Louise Underhill from Priestess Tarot,  had tasked us to discuss within this blogpost whom we would like to invite to tea on this occasion, with the help of our Tarot cards.

Training As A Kickboxer

I did not have to think too hard on this one.  As many friends are aware, I have been training very hard at the gym 6 days a week with the goal of wanting to compete hopefully next year.  Training had been hard and grueling, particularly for me because I had recovered from a knee surgery 2 years ago, had been extremely unfit, is of the age when most would be doing lawn-bowling instead and I started kickboxing lessons only at the beginning of this year.  My coaches had been unrelenting whenever I felt like giving up or when I wallowed in self-doubt during some of my more difficult training sessions.  Last weekend was one such moment, when I was pummelled mercilessly during a sparring session.  Other than a headache and a bruised ego, I crashed into a complete funk for almost a week because I felt like boxing was not a sport for someone my age and that I was so bad at it that I could not even defend myself at a sparring session. I thought perhaps I had better stick to lawn-bowling, knitting or at best, geriatric line-dancing.

Bruce Lee

So, with my Tarot cards, I had decided to channel my favourite martial artist and  childhood inspiration, Bruce Lee.  I needed advice.

First, let me explain why I love Bruce Lee.  Like me, he has a spiritual life path of 7. This was a life path of one who was a thinker and analyzer who had the capability of processing complex information, and who approached profound subjects like philosophy and spirituality with a lot of curiosity and enthusiasm to learn more.  Like Bruce and myself, people with life path 7 prefer to be alone and live  by our own ideas.  Like him, our lifepath 7 makes us a perfectionist at heart.  I shared some aspects of that life path 7 that made up the Bruce Lee that we know. I enjoyed the technicalities of kickboxing and worked with a few coaches who were specialists in their respective fields from a kettlebell specialist, a strength and conditioning coach, a boxing coach and a Muay Thai coach to hone the different aspects of my skills as a Kickboxer.

Like a perfectionist, I worked hard and expected to be ring-ready in no time, but that was not to be and it disappointed me when my boxing coach said, "You will not be performing in the ring for at least a year and a half yet." I was clearly not ready, and disappointingly so.

The below is a glimpse of the conversation I had with Bruce Lee, using my Tarot cards.

The Advice Of The World's Greatest Martial Artist

Me: Tell me more about yourself Bruce, I am fascinated by the legend that you have become.

Card picked : Page of Pentacles

Bruce: Since young, at the urging of my Dad, I was committed to learning new skills like martial arts. I worked hard to train and study  martial arts. My dad thinks it will be useful for my future as there will be opportunities to do something with the skills I had learnt, like coaching perhaps. I have always said, "Life itself is your teacher and you are in a constant state of learning."

Me: What shaped your career as a martial artist?

Cards picked : The Moon + The Tower

Bruce:  I went through my youth getting involved in street fights. One of the street fights involved a member of the triad or secret society and my Dad became very worried that the gangs would put a revenge contract on my head. It caused the family a lot of anxiety and with a heavy heart, I was sent away very quickly to the United States to pursue further studies.  My life took a sudden turn in the United States where I got to  meet new friends, build a new life, teach martial arts, and I spent time honing  my martial arts skills and adapting other skills that I had picked up to create my own brand of martial arts.

When I was living in Hong Kong, I trained in the martial art form of Wing Chun under my master Ip Man. Then when I moved to the U.S., my skills evolved into a martial art form I had created and named after myself called Jun Fan Gung Fu (Jun Fan is my real name by the way) and as I started getting more exposed to other forms of combat sports and started to build more flexibility in my approach to martial arts, I created what is known today as Jeet Kune Do.

Changes in life are just opportunities for you to rebuild yourself with new skills and knowledge.  Flexibility is key and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. For example, I adapted the footwork of fencing and striking skills of western boxing in my martial arts.  Although it was traditionally forbidden for a Chinese martial artist to teach and impart skills to non-Chinese people, I did so anyway and am proud to count many Western students who have been true to the teachings of Jeet Kune Do. Growth comes from flexibility and willingness to open your heart and mind to new learnings and experiences. Remember my words, You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”

Me: I am beginning to feel that this might not be my sport. I feel upset that I can never be as quick, as fit, as strong, as nimble as other kickboxers I know. I keep getting pummelled at sparring sessions. If I cannot even survive a sparring session, I will never be ready for the ring.

Cards picked : Ace of Wands Reversed + 8 of Pentacles Reversed

Bruce: Yes, I can see how frustrated you are with the slow progress and you feel that in spite of training everyday, you are not progressing as quickly as you want to.  However, that is not the way a true martial artist thinks.  You are approaching martial arts with impatience and a fear of defeat. You have let your ego get in the way of what a true martial artist should be. Remember what I had said, "Defeat in anything is merely temporary. Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing. It is a path leading to success and truth."  Continue to train hard and never give up.

Me: What other advice can you give me to pick my gloves up again and get more committed to my kickboxing training?

Cards picked : 5 of Swords + 3 of Pentacles

Bruce:  Your kickboxing journey like the journey of any martial artist, is not an easy one. It will be riddled with a lot of obstacles, even more defeats, injuries and other setbacks.  I had said before, " Without frustration, you might not be able to discover you can do something on your own. We grow through conflict."  Even when you feel daunted, you must press on in your training to get better everyday. Even when you have won a fight, that is not the end.  The journey continues, so that you fall again, get up again, lose a few more fights and go on to win a few more fights.  A martial artist's journey is always a work in progress. Do not be afraid of this ever-winding road  and just continue to work towards your goals.  Do not allow defeat and disillusionment to dampen your enthusiasm.
By continuously training hard and with the help of your coaches, you will be able to fulfill your goals as a Kickboxer.  There are no egos, no barriers and no limits as long as you approach your journey with flexibility, determination and diligence.  Remember, "If you always put limit on everything you do, physical or anything else. It will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them."

Bruce Lee's short but meaningful life had inspired millions after him to pick up martial arts. Many have gone on to become great martial artists but many have failed. I have got many odds stacked against me like my age, my fitness level and an imperfect knee. However, so did Bruce. He was a foreigner in a strange country, he met his fair share of racial discrimination, and he was even pushed back by his own fellow Asian martial arts teachers who saw his teaching of martial arts to foreigners as a betrayal of the code. That never stopped him. He went on to become one of the greatest martial arts teachers and a legend.  Even after his death, he continued to inspire people like me.

Happy Samhain, Halloween, All Souls' Day or whatever you might be celebrating.  I hope you enjoyed my blog post.  Before you think I am woo-woo crazy just because I talked to the dead, I would like to remind you that the best gifts to those who are in the present are the lessons from those who had lived in the past.

I thank the Bruce Lee Foundation for being the resource I turned to for my research for this blogpost.  The cards I had used in the reading, was taken from the Radiant Rider Waite Tarot deck updated by Virginijus Poshkus.

Tarot Tip Tuesdays - Busting Some Tarot Myths

Myth #1:
You need to be a psychic clairvoyant to be a good Tarot reader.

Reality:
Wrong.  There are so many great Tarot readers who are not clairvoyants.  You just need to have a heart of compassion and be attuned to your intuition.  Anyone can learn to read the cards.  The knowledge is opened to those who are curious, who love to explore and learn new things all the time, who are not afraid to  take on life’s adventures along with the Fool on his journey and who embrace the compassionate quest of using the cards to help and guide others.

Myth #2 :
Tarot cards are evil things that come in between you and God’s will.  By reading Tarot for others, you would be influencing the querant’s actions and hinder what has been pre-destined.

Reality:
Wrong.   You are the master of your own destiny.  The cards can only be a guide to help you make the right choices for the highest good.  Where free will comes in, is when the querant has that free will to make that choice he or she deems will influence the right outcome  That is why I am adamant about doing a Tarot reading in a positive way, that is advice-centric and clear on purpose.    A tarot reader should not tell a querant what to do, what choices to make, or which direction to take.  Life is full of options and a Tarot reader’s role is to use the cards to provide options, like a friend, offering a friendly advice to help the querant along his or her journey.

Myth #3:
Tarot readers need to be wearing long flowing skirts, dressed like gypsies and have a zen-like composure

Reality:
Wrong.  A tarot-reader should be true to him or herself.  It does not matter what you wear and how you look.  You don’t have to keep a zen-like composure all the time.  Just be yourself and you might earn better trust from your clients by being REAL. I am loud,  very direct  and will not mince my words. I am also a boxer who just happens to be a Tarot reader.  It does not make me a bad Tarot reader.  It just makes me different.  I don’t have a crystal ball, a headscarf and all the trappings of a “fortune-teller” at the fair ground.  But I am comfortable in my boxing gear of shorts and T-shirt and still read Tarot with plenty of compassion.  So far, I haven’t had any complaints.

Myth #4:
Reading Tarot is un-Christian and defies God’s will.

Reality:
Wrong.  Doing and saying things which serves only  yourself at the expense of the highest good, is un-Christian and defies God’s will.  A clear purpose of using your intuitive gifts and talent to help others, is not.

Myth # 5:
Because Tarot readers violate God’s will by influencing the actions of their querants, most Tarot readers die young, lead unbalanced lives and meet with tragic circumstances.

Reality:
Wrong.  Along with many of my Tarot reading friends in the international community, I am blessed with so much abundance and a zest for life.  If I die young, and I am not young, by the way, that’s okay, because I have lived my life to the fullest, loving every day, and being loved every day.  So this is DEFINITELY a myth and laughable at that.

Tarot Tip Tuesdays - The Devil Is A Scary Card

Whether you are new to Tarot and in the throes of building a connection with your Tarot cards or an advanced Tarot reader diligently honing your Tarot reading skills, I am putting out a Tarot tip a week to help you to consistently make Tarot a part of your everyday life.

So here goes your Tarot Tip for this Tuesday:

I was working with one of my Tarot protégés yesterday, practicing some new spreads when she picked the Devil and felt so uncomfortable with it that she struggled with the interpretation of the card as a result.  Much of the fear was caused by how she was taught to view the Devil from her religious upbringing.  She confessed that that was one card she would put aside and not read with it when she picked it in a spread.  She went ahead instead to pick other cards, choosing to ignore the Devil. She jokingly called the card, "It whose name should not be mentioned."

When I first started out as a new and inexperienced Tarot reader, I too was uncomfortable with a couple of cards. One was the Devil. The image of the Devil in a lot of Tarot decks often appeared quite scary.  It did not help that my Catholic upbringing saw me reading books about how scarily evil the Devil was. Today, the only deck where the Devil is portrayed in a more colorful and less scary manner is the one in Barbara Moore's Tarot deck, Book of Shadows Volume 2 So Below. The Devil in that deck is represented by the image of a sundae!

This was what I did to overcome the discomfort. I meditated on the Devil card. You can use the same method with any other cards in the deck that you are uncomfortable with.

When I meditated on a Tarot card, I visualized myself  “walking” into the cards to have a “conversation” with the images in the cards.
Meditating On The Devil Card
I used The Devil card from the Radiant Rider Waite Tarot deck.  When I meditated on The Devil, I acknowledged my fear and discomfort. This would force me to look at the details around me when I "walked into the card" and I looked at them in an objective manner.  By stepping back and viewing the image objectively, I realized it was not a scary card once I focused on the significance of the details of the imagery.  The Devil card  made me question my intent a lot whenever I arrived at his doorstep.  He would remind me of the folly of being too attached or obsessed with material gains, and forced me to confront my fears by opening my mind to other options in my life if my attachments to certain things start to do my head in.  He’s a bit of a cool dude though quite ugly.  First I ventured to talk to the 2 people in chains, but I hear a distressed mutter, "What do I do? What do I do?"  I then asked the Devil in that card,  “Why have you captured these 2 people?  Can’t you let them go?”  He replied me quite calmly, “It may be a short leash Joanna, but their collars are loosely fastened.  They have the free choice to remove these chains and leave if they want to.”  Cool, ugly but wise too.
Over the years, it became one of my favorite cards.

May your Tarot cards provide you with a full deck of possibilities throughout your day.

Turning Darkness Into Light This Yuletide Season

This blog post was written as my contribution to the Yule Tarot Blog Hop. Welcome to the last Tarot blog hop of 2013.  If at any point you are daunted by the length of my blog post below, you can visit the blog before mine,  the blog after mine, or comb through the Master List for the rest of the participating blogs by following the links here:

Rebirth At Yule

This Tarot blog hop is Yule-themed and focused on understanding how each member of our Tarot Blog Hop community had  “Turned Darkness Into Light”.

Yule night or Winter Solstice sees the longest night of the year.  When the sun rises the next morning, we celebrate light with the rebirth of the sun as the dark half of the year makes way for the lighter half.   In the Northern Hemisphere, Yule was known as the Winter Solstice while in the southern hemisphere Yule was known as the Summer Solstice.  No matter where one was located and whichever religion or traditions one followed, Yule was always a magical time filled with excitement and steeped in traditions.  Yule saw the triumph of light over darkness.  As Celtic Yule lore went, Yule was celebrated as the rebirth of the Sun when the Oak King who ruled over the light part of the year, defeated the Holly King who ruled over the dark part of the year. So Yule brought with it the opportunity to be reborn with new light.
As the wrangler for this Yule 2013 Blog Hop, the season offered me a time to think about rebirth.  You see, it's been just over a year that I had been part of this Tarot Blog Hop community.  When I joined the community, I got more than the chance to share my thoughts about Tarot.  I gained so much more.
Gaining New Friends
Throughout the year, as part of this Tarot blog hop community, I built new friendships that transcended race, religious beliefs and geographical barriers.  Through them, I gained so much knowledge about how the Sabbats along the Wheel of the Year were celebrated. Besides gaining new friends, amongst them, I had found wonderful Tarot professionals who had become mentors, teachers, and confidantes so critical to my growth as a Tarot reader.
Indeed, the members of this Tarot blog hop community were my light along this journey of growth.  One cannot possibly fathom the number of reading techniques, Tarot spreads, astrological and numerological correspondences, as well as spiritual practices that I had learnt from this group of Tarot professionals. Because of their openness, I realized, I need not be bothered with an “ism” to feel belonged.  I need not be a Pagan to be celebrating the Sabbats together with my Pagan friends, just as one need not be a Tarot enthusiast, to be opened to the advice and guidance I could provide with my Tarot cards.  Through the darkness of ignorance, my fellow Tarot pals held my hand towards the light of knowledge.
Gaining New Perspective On My Faith
I finally went back to church.  Raised as a Roman Catholic, I made peace with myself and with my God over the course of the year.  You see, I grew up realizing that my spiritual journey was a matter between Him and I, so I welded magical systems and rituals within my Catholic framework to create what was uniquely a path of my own.  As Monte Farber said, "Rituals help build a spiritual connection in our daily lives by acknowledging the existence of a Higher Power."

In a way, this experience became my rebirth.  Comfortable with my relationship with my God, no longer ashamed of my intuitive gifts and believing that He accepted my eccentricities and loved me as I was, I finally went back to church to attend mass every Sunday.  That period of "darkness" had indeed turned into light because I accepted that I was given a gift for a purpose.  My full moon ritual every month, was always dedicated to thanking Him for the abundance that surrounds me.  This Yule, as I held the energy within my sacred space, I thought of the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines who do not have heat, clean water, shelter and food.  My ritual  was dedicated to bringing warmth, light and comfort to those who are not as fortunate as we are during this yuletide season.
I would like to take this opportunity to share my prayer specially written for my Yule ritual:

"Poinsettias, mistletoe and holly bright.
We welcome Yule and the return of light.
Angels guard and guide me as I cast my circle tonight.
The sun returns, with His birth, the Lord of Light.
As I light this candle to dispel darkness, doubt and disappointments,
I thank God for blessings of love, hope and abundance.
I pray that I bring light , healing and love as I go forth,
To touch the world from East to South to West to North.”

Gaining A New Spiritual Awakening - The Judgement Card
Perhaps, the most important thing I had gained just recently, was my spiritual reawakening.

As Yule for me was like a rebirth, I had decided to meditate on the Judgement card.  For this purpose, I used the Judgement card from my Radiant Rider Waite Tarot deck updated by Virginijus Poshkus and published by US Games.
The Judgement card depicts a  man, woman and child rising from the dead on judgment day, to the sounds of the trumpet being played by an angel.  Mountains and turbulent sea in the background represent  life’s challenges that they had been through and are being called to be judged on their response to each of these challenges.
I meditated on how my spiritual journey had evolved and this card was so appropriate.  My new spiritual awakening saw me walking into a new discovery with my Tarot cards.  As I grew my intuitive skills, I had become more opened to receiving spiritual messages in whatever shape and form. I have recently learnt to use the cards to connect with those who had passed.

I had a conversation with my late father-in-law a few weeks ago.  You can read about it here: http://sungoddesstarot.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-conversation-with-my-father-in-law.html    The conversation I had with him through my cards had made me conscious of what I needed to do more to solder my relationship with David.

Also, because my conversation with my father-in-law opened an opportunity for me to convince David about the reality of the afterlife, I was 'urged' to describe an incident whereby David had a huge fight with his brother, Rob when he was quite young.  Now, David is much younger than Rob, so with that age gap, it was quite out of character for them to be in an intense fight like that.  I described to him about the vision of how he pinned Rob down in an attempt to rain some punches at him when his usually docile Dad stepped in to break the fight. His Dad was a gentle, quiet soul who was never known to be angry but he was terribly angry and disappointed then.  When I related this incident to David, he said, " How did you know this?  I have never told you about this incident before. It was so long ago".   I calmly replied, " Your Dad told me, so you can believe me enough to have a proper conversation with him. And you have to do so soon before he goes back into the light."  I encouraged David to spend a moment to talk to his Dad, and he did, so that he could 'close the loop' on the conversations he should have had with him but never could.

I am not sure where this new discovery will lead me.  However, I am still awed by how much more depth I could build with my cards, and what else I could do with them.  As long as my heart and mind remains open to spiritual messages, I could help clients  beyond the usual career, family and relationship issues. Perhaps, with practice, I could hold the hands of some clients through their period of grief and bereavement. After all, true to my purpose, my intuitive skills were meant to help them turn darkness into light.

Thanks for allowing me to share what Yule means to me.  Do visit Louise's blog lined up before mine or Olivia's blog lined up after mine.  And do not miss out on the rest of the wonderful blogs.  The respective links are below:

Between My God And Me

My Thoughts On Rituals

In my past blogpost http://sungoddesstarot.blogspot.sg/2012/09/if-it-harms-none-do-what-you-will.html I grumbled about intolerance to different faiths, belief systems and practices.  So I thought to share some of my personal practices within my faith, that incorporates what I deemed as my gifts from the universe.  I can't find a better, "less frightening" word for it other than the word "rituals", because it is what it is, a ritual, and it is not different from what is practiced by every faith and belief system, although they differed in shape and form.  My Blue Moon ritual done recently as a form of thanksgiving and a prayer of intent to the universe was an example.

Customising My Rituals To My Faith

As a Roman Catholic, I had long not been going to church for reasons I had discussed in my last blogpost. However, I truly believe in my one God and have a very personal relationship with Him, like most Catholics.  Because I believe in the fact that He had a purpose in providing me with the gift of intuition to help people in need, I had decided that when I say my prayers, or perform a ritual, I was going to incorporate these gifts by selecting relevant and meaningful tarot cards for the ritual, burning my candles, and blessing a selected set of crystals that I will use on my clients.  These, are all tools that I use day to day anyway in my consultation sessions with my clients. So why not use them to glorify my God during my prayers?

A Glimpse Of My Rituals

So here's what I'd like to share about how I practice my rituals.  And to "nay-sayers", these are NOT in any shape or form, heathen.

Casting A Circle

I cast a circle to create a sacred space for me to have that private conversation with my God.  It's the same way I would pull a colleague quietly to a watercooler in a corner of the office to have a private conversation with her.  I cast the circle by blessing the space with a prayer as I literally trace a "mental" space around my tools and I.  I know my friends of different faiths do the same, albeit in a different manner perhaps. I cast my sacred space by saying a prayer to my guardian angel, Michael:

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend me from battle;
Be my safeguard
against the malice and snares
of the negative seen or unseen energy forces.

Protect me from the ill intentions,
jealousies and poisonous tongues
of negative people.

Enshroud me with your positive light
and empower me with confidence,
strength and wisdom to  trample
and destroy the negative forces around me.

I consecrate every step I take
towards positivity unto you,
and invoke you with my humble trust and belief
that you are my protector, my defender, and my archangel,
in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
One God who lives forever and ever, Amen

Calling On The Directions

Here again, my friends of different faiths do something similar, albeit differently by articulating different words.  So here's what I say to my guardian angels from all directions of the universe:
Guardian Angels from the East, I call upon you to guide me and watch over me today.
With the power of knowledge, intuition and wisdom, guided by Air, and carried to me by the winds,
I ask that you keep watch over me within this circle as I articulate my thanks and intent in my prayer to you
Let all whom I send blessings, assurance and clarity to, be able to accept them in perfect love and perfect trust of the universe
Guardian Angels from the South, I call upon you to guide me and watch over me today.
With the power of energy and will, guided by Fire, and carried to me by this wand,
I ask that you keep watch over me within this circle as I articulate my thanks and intent in my prayer to you
Let all whom I send blessings, assurance and clarity to, be able to accept them in perfect love and perfect trust of the universe
Guardian Angels from the West, I call upon you to guide me and watch over me today.
With the power of passion and emotion, guided by Water, and carried to me by this cup,
I ask that you keep watch over me within this circle as I articulate my thanks and intent in my prayer to you
Let all whom I send blessings, assurance and clarity to, be able to accept them in perfect love and perfect trust of the universe
Guardian Angels from the North, I call upon you to guide me and watch over me today.
With the power of abundance, wealth and strength, guided by Earth, and carried to me by this coin,
I ask that you keep watch over me within this circle as I articulate my thanks and intent in my prayer to you
Let all whom I send blessings, assurance and clarity to, be able to accept them in perfect love and perfect trust of the universe
 Blessing My Tools

I always select specific candles, crystals and relevant tarot cards which I will bless within this sacred space.  I would articulate my prayer of thanks and an intention or two, trusting that the universe will guide me along to manifest these intentions with the help of my tools.

After that, I will close my conversation with my God and my guardian angels, with a little prayer of thanks.   You see,  it's not too different from other faiths, and from what's being practised by my fellow Catholic friends isn't it?

If It Harms None, Do What You Will

Why Did I Have To Explain My Blue Moon Ritual To A Friend?

The Blue Moon last month on 31st August, was special to me.  Firstly, I never knew what a Blue Moon was.  I used the phrase “once in a blue moon” often enough and realized the phrase was taken from the fact that the Blue Moon did occur once every few years when there were 2 full moons in a month.  Happy that I had learnt something new that week, I had decided to do a Blue Moon ritual of thanksgiving.  If you knew me, I always looked for any opportunity to celebrate and that was definitely an appropriate opportunity to celebrate.  So I lit a couple of candles that night, picked out my favorite crystals and tarot cards that depicted abundance for which I was thanking the universe, and did a thanksgiving prayer as well as a prayer with a special intention.

I felt a-washed with peace after that ritual and proceeded to take a photo of the paraphernalia used at my Blue Moon ritual so that I could add the photo to my blog post about my Blue Moon ritual.  The following week, a friend texted me after reading my blog and after a cryptic chat that bordered on her intent to provide some cautionary advice, she asked “I understand you are doing magical spells, is that true?”  So I replied, “I don’t think you know what that means.  And it is an interesting thought but no, I don’t know how to cast a spell.  However, if you are referring to my blog post about my Blue Moon ritual, it is absolutely magical that I had an opportunity to give thanks to the universe for the abundance I have received on a special occasion like this.”

She did apologize for having that misconception but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth because I realized there are so many people out there who needed to be educated about the co-existence of faiths and belief systems.  It saddened me to see that because some people governed their perceptions with a strict notion that no other religions, faiths, belief systems, cultures and ways of life should be tolerated, they would close their minds to understanding and accepting that these different systems should co-exist harmoniously within our society.

Why Couldn’t We All Just Co-Exist?

My spiritual awakening with my tarot cards had taken me on a journey of continuous reading, learning, and opened doors to so many wonderful friends from different walks of life, different countries, cultures, religions and belief systems.  I am so thankful for that diversity as it added color to my life and knowledge to my mind.

I am a Roman Catholic, born and bred as one, and completely proud of it.  Being one doesn’t make me the same as the rest of my Roman Catholic friends apart from our belief in one God.  For one, I practice my faith differently and don’t attend mass.  As a divorcee, who went on to remarry, I wasn’t allowed to partake in Holy Communion with the rest of the community during mass.  So I had decided at that point, that my relationship was only between my God and me.  And that was okay.

I have got friends who are practicing Hindus, Christians, Taoists, Muslims, Pagans and more.  I love them for enriching my life by teaching me so many things about their respective faiths.  I don’t profess to understand the tenets of each faith but to have a faith that helps guide your life in itself is beautiful.  During the journey that I had walked with my tarot cards, I had met with a lot of skepticism which I realized was just purely fear and misunderstanding of the unknown.   Throughout that same journey, I also had met people who view the different faiths and belief systems with a narrow lens.

You Don’t Have To Understand To Accept

That friend who texted me possibly thought I was practicing witchcraft.  I read a lot about Wicca but am not an expert in its teachings.  However, I am aware of the misconception and fears around the faith and I am quite annoyed that such myopic perceptions have exacerbated a culture of intolerance in our otherwise colorful communities of wonderful people.

So, to these people, I would like to ask a question.  Underlining the Wiccan Rede is this very important but simple intent – “If it harms none, do what thou will.”   What is so wrong with this phrase, and how bad or harmful can this intent be, that you would view the faith in such a negative light?

I hope with all my heart that even if one does not understand a specific belief system, whatever religion you adhere to, whatever way of life you choose to live, you would choose to live in perfect love and perfect trust of the universe’s grand plans for peace and harmony.

With that said, I am preparing for my Mabon ritual whereby I will thank the universe for holding my hand through the last few months of transformation that I had experienced during my journey with my tarot cards.  I am inviting you to join me to do the same.
