Tarot Tip Tuesdays - Keep It Simple With Numerology And Tarot

Whether you are new to Tarot and in the throes of building a connection with your Tarot cards or an advanced Tarot reader diligently honing your Tarot reading skills, I am putting out a Tarot tip a week to help you to consistently make Tarot a part of your everyday life.

So here goes your Tarot Tip for this Tuesday:

 I have been trying to keep things simple. Some of my peers keep their Tarot spreads really small but effective, and I have been quite inspired by them.  If you have your querant's  birthdate, a focused question and just a couple of Tarot cards, these would be enough to provide an adequate advice to guide him or her through an issue.   Here is how you can do it and I will be using an actual client's question to illustrate this.

Step 1: Obtain the basic information from your querant.  All you would need is a birthdate and a focused question. Remember to keep the question focused so that the advice provided can be a focused one.

The Client: Helen

Birthdate:  25 January 1983

Astrological Sign : Aquarius

Question: What advice can Tarot provide to help me in my effort to meet the right person for a meaningful relationship ?

Step 2: Calculate your querant's character and lifepath numbers. These will offer you a glimpse of your querant's attitudes and behavior and how he or she responds to a given situation.

Character (behavior and attitudes ) : Add the compound number of your querant's day of birth.  In this case, her day of birth is 25, so her character number is 7  (2+5 = 7).

From her character number, I deduced that Helen was a perfectionist. She over-analyzed situations and would spend a lot of time mulling over potential suitors, deciding whether or not he was a perfect match for her.  When a relationship did not go as plan, she would again over-rationalize it, and turn the situation over and over again in her head, thus causing her, over time, to build up walls around her in a bid to protect herself.  No wonder she was not getting much head way in developing meaningful relationships with potential partners.   She had also formed such high expectations of her potential partners that often she lets romantic opportunities slip past her. Now this lined up with her zodiac sign Aquarius which clearly influenced her idealism and her tendency to over-rationalize situations.

With just the character number and her zodiac sign, the advice I gave Helen was to balance her head and heart when it came to managing her perceptions about potential partners. She should try to manage her expectations of them and loosen up abit so that she could fully enjoy discovering new relationships.

 Life Path (Opportunities and lessons in life) : Add the day of birth, month of birth and year of birth.  Then add up the individual numbers of the compound number.    In this case, by adding up her day of birth 25, her month of birth 1 and her year of birth  1983, the compound number is 29. On further reduction of that compound number, her life path number is 2 (2+5+1+1+9+8+3 = 29).  Then reduce the compound number (2+9 = 11. 1+1 = 2).

Her lifepath number 2 told me that life offered her opportunities to heal, guide, support and teach others from her life experiences.  She also had opportunities to bring people together and be that peacemaker during tension-filled situations.  Given this insight, I was sure a lot of men gravitated to her because of her nurturing and supportive nature.  They could trust her as a good friend and advisor.  Sometimes, she should genuinely render such support instead of setting expectations for herself that these guys who approach her could potentially be "marriageable material". This would take the pressure off her tendency to over-think about potential partners and perhaps allow her to enjoy meaningful friendships which have the potential to grow into something deeper if time and chemistry permitted.

Step 3: Now that you have got a glimpse of your querant's attitudes and how he or she might respond to a given situation, you can just pick a card to understand the current situation, one for his or her obstacle and another one for advice.  Use the birthdate numerology to deepen the insight from the cards and guide you as you provide your querants a focused advice. 

Tarot cards picked:  Situation - The World Reversed ; Obstacle - Emperor Reversed ; Advice - 8 of Swords.

Situation - The World Reversed

The World reversed is indicative of Helen having experienced past relationships that had gone bad and she had not healed or there was no closure.  The  lack of closure is preventing her from embarking on new relationships in a meaningful manner. Remember, we had established through her numerology that she had been turning her experience with the past relationship over and over in her head that she had gradually built walls around her? The World Reversed affirms this and tells me that Helen is possibly clinging to residual resentment and hurt, yet she feels frustrated about not being able to meet the right guy. 

Obstacle - The Emperor Reversed

As a manifestation of her obstacle, this card tells me that Helen is a strong, and perhaps domineering and even possessive person.  When it comes to relationships, she might unconsciously expect that she can steer it to the perfect relationship that she had  shaped in her mind.  This had the potential of overwhelming potential partners. Relationships are about love and support whilst respecting individual growth and space.  Remember that the numerology we had calculated for her pointed to the fact that she had high expectations of her potential partners and when life blows these guys her way when she could be a source of support and advice for them, sometimes she could overwhelm them with her expectations as she attempts to suss if they are "marriageable material".

Advice - 8 of Swords 

The 8 of Swords reversed advised Helen to free herself from her preconceived notions of what the perfect relationship should be.  She should also let to of past hurts and resentment and change her perspective or approach about potential relationships.  This swords card was the perfect advice to end the spread and the reading simply because most of Helen's issues were driven by mental limitations like her pre-set perceptions, and her high expectations as deduced by her numerology.

As you can see, the Tarot spread is small and all it took was the querant's birthdate to add another dimension to the advice given. Although the process was quite straightforward and simple, the advice given to the querant is robust enough to empower her to work on it and change her course of action to achieve her goals,

Happy New Moon In Gemini

Blessed New Moon!  This new moon in Gemini promises to make you itch with mental restlessness as you embark on new projects or start nurturing new creative ideas or venture towards the beginning of a new job or new relationship.  You will be embracing these with so much energy and enthusiasm, charging ahead in a gung-ho manner with numerous ideas and grand plans.  

This week, many of my intuitive readings veered on clearing past relationship issues or dealing with an impasse in a current relationship.  If you are experiencing either of these,  do know that since Mars in Libra is direct now, this new moon in Gemini only serves to force you to go beyond that mental restlessness to actually doing something about it.  Remember, if you want to move forward, you cannot  just be all thinking and all talk, but you will need to take action too! 

Now, this is where I have to inject a caution driven from my personal theme for this year that I keep harping about. Yes, BALANCE.  You need balance.  You see, Mercury is going retrograde in the next week. It will span from 7 June to 2 July.  So, it might be worthwhile for you to set new intentions during this new moon to manifest your goals by lending them all the enthusiasm and energy that you have, yet navigate towards these goals with plans that come from balancing logical thought with an intuitive heart.

Guide Your Relationship With Your Intuition During This Full Moon In Scorpio

14 May 2014.  The full moon is in Scorpio and the Sun is in Taurus.  It is fabulous timing for me to use this full moon to discuss the topic of RELATIONSHIPS, because I have just celebrated my 13th wedding anniversary and my husband's 50th birthday.  Indeed, this full moon forced me to think about what I am bringing to our marriage, how I can inject more romance in our relationship and what else I would need to do to walk this journey hand in hand with him, through more wedding anniversaries to come.  Yes, this full moon in Scorpio will make you do the same - rethink about where you are in your own relationship.

You might  be in the throes of creating a balance between the need to shake up your relationship in that "make or break" moment and your need  to hold on to some semblance of emotional security.  This would mean an increased intensity in the emotional flux that you could be experiencing within you, 

Emotions Run Deep

This full moon, you could expect emotions to run really deeply when you set your intentions to connect even more with your loved ones.  This would be the time you might think about how much trust you have in your partner, how much passion you might have lost over the years together, or how to take the relationship up another level.  As the full moon brings out all that emotional flux within your heart, you are reminded that this full moon, like all full moons, would be the right time to bring. your intentions to fruition and whisper a prayer asking for the courage to finally accept any transformational experiences spurred by relationship upheavals.  Perhaps you might want to say a prayer for the strength let go of behavioral patterns that impact your current relationships.  You might also finally decide to let go of a past relationship that had not served you well.  And if like me, you have been married for quite a number of years, you might decide to work on putting the passion and romance back in your relationship.  I am definitely doing that during this full moon.  Hence, in anticipation of this, we had just spent a glorious week celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary in the gorgeous island of Sri Lanka.

Be Guided By Your Intuition

This is after all a full moon governed by the element of water.  So when you are questioning where you stand in your relationship, or attempting to make sense of the emotional upheavals that you are experiencing, my advice would be to let your intuition guide the direction of your relationship.  

This full moon falls within the week of the Summer Solstice celebrations too when  the energy of growth and abundance is pulsating in the air.  So my prayers for you this full moon is that you might manifest a relationship with your loved one that is filled with abundant love, laughter, trust, opened communication and understanding.

Beltane Tarot Blog Hop - A Union Of Opposites

What Is Beltane?
  
Beltane is a fire festival widely celebrated to mark the midpoint of the vernal equinox and the Summer Solstice. Traditionally, to welcome warmer weather, people during this time would indulge in cheery Springtime activities like planting seeds, dancing around Maypoles, starting bonfires.  They celebrated with plenty of fresh flowers and there was generally more fun, love and laughter in the air.   

The Lovers Card In Tarot

Beltane is one festival that celebrated love, fertility and union.  The Lovers Card aptly signifies this at a time when my Pagan friends traditionally honored the union of the god and goddess during Beltane.  As the theme of this blog hop was "A Union Of Opposites", I had to look for proof points to support this theme.  Of course I need not have strayed too far because during this time,  the Roman  Catholics celebrated the feast of St Bertha of Kent on 1 May.  She was credited for introducing Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England.  It was interesting to note that she married the pagan King, Ethelberht of Kent.  That sounded to me like a wonderful celebration of love and somewhat a union of opposites too. 

Inspired by St Bertha's story, I had decided to look for examples when I had created a "union of opposites" in my Tarot practice.  It struck me that I had been growing this "union of opposites" quite recently when I discovered my clairvoyant and clairsentient skills after attending a spiritual retreat organised by Danielle Dove and Karina Ladet.

A Spiritual Transformation

During the retreat, I went through a spiritual transformation that had evolved into a journey I am still currently awed by.  I was forced to step out of my comfort zone and temporarily remove my usual tools of the trade, Tarot, Numerology and Astrology.  I learnt then to trust my intuition completely without the use of these tools. I struggled with it and realised that I had to go through this learning process to come to terms with my ego, shed it completely, and then acceped the gifts of clairvoyance and clairsentience in a bid to better serve my purpose.  I spent weeks practising channeling without my Tarot cards and gradually came to terms with these gifts.  

Combining Tarot With Clairvoyance

In the weeks that followed, I began creating that union of opposites by using my Tarot cards with my clairvoyance.  This was the  reading that I had done, detailing my first experience of doing a channeling before creating a Tarot spread.  I am still in awe of it and so grateful that I got the chance to do this for a client.  

A Union Of Opposites

One evening,  a fellow psychic friend contacted me and expressed a lot of fear and anxiety.  Like me in the last month or so, she was going through a purging process.  She had to purge her ego too.  Although she was living half the world away, I was able to channel for her and felt a pain in my upper back on  the right. It felt like I was carrying a burden. It was a reflection of her fear as a burden, weighing down on her back.  It was a fear of not knowing where her skills would take her.  Her doubts driven by her rational mind was taking over her intuition.  That blocked her ability to channel clearly and caused her even more fear.   I felt a cord at my Solar Plexus chakra too. It was a reflection of a negative cord she was bearing that was causing her  a lot of anxiety.  This negative cord had to be cut.  It was put there by her ego.  At the same time I felt my crown and third eye chakra buzzing and I knew it was a reflection of how actively her upper chakras were opened.  So I proceeded to do some cord-cutting to help relieve her of her fears and anxieties.  I also told her that my spirit guides were guiding me to let her know that she needed to go to a hill near a home to meditate and make peace with herself.

She felt better at that point as I carefully explained what I was doing for her with my channeling. I was communicating to her midway via Facebook message when I accidentally rolled my mouse over a Facebook post by Tarot By Arwen.  The Guardian of Air card from the Gaian Tarot deck by Joanna P. Colbert popped up.   This was an excerpt from her post, "The Guardian of Air is the Queen of Swords.  Swords/Air is the mental suit.  I set my intention to be a guardian of my own mental processes.  I speak with love and kindness."  I thought that was so beautiful. Feeling inspired then, I emailed the image of the card to my friend and I visualised myself holding her hand through her journey of spiritual self discovery.  I explained the synchronicity of the appearance of the card with our discussion about her situation by saying, "This is the Guardian of Air from the Gaian Tarot deck.  She is likened to the Queen of Swords.  She asks that you not be too over-critical of yourself.  Do not always judge your capabilities and compare them vis-a-vis the others who are going through similar spiritual journeys.  We all walk our respective journeys at our own pace. So do not be too hard on yourself." This truly resonated with her as she had been managing a lot of anxiety and doubt about her own capabilities.

So you see, both sets of skills though quite different, can co-exist side by side.  Just as I had combined Tarot, Numerology and Astrology in my readings, I have now started to add another dimension to the readings by adding my clairvoyant and clairsentient skills as well.  I now channel for my clients before I meet them face to face.  The Tarot cards would then become my tools to affirm the messages and visions that I got from my channelling.  With renewed confidence, I revamped the way I did my client readings by creating a perfect union between my clairvoyance and Tarot moving forward.  The more I did this, the more I surprised myself with the clarity and accuracy my client and I got from the readings.  Here is another reading that exemplified this. 

I commend Maureen for coming up with a theme that had helped me process that guilt I felt when I dropped my cards for awhile to practice my channeling.  With this union of opposites, nothing had changed.  No, actually, the readings were better.  I felt I served my purpose better with my gifts.   Since then, I have been happily blending my clairvoyant and clairsentient skills with Tarot, and I will continue to do it with immense gratitude for the opportunities entrusted to me by the Universe.

Full Moon In Libra Beckons You To Focus On Positive Relationships

Happy Full Moon everyone!  As usual, the full moon welcomes the closing of that door behind you against what did not serve you in the past,  to open the door to a new beginning filled with abundant possibilities that could set you on a journey towards a more positive life.  

It is not a coincidence that while we open our hearts and minds to transformation during this Full Moon, we are also in the the midst of Holy Week, preparing for Easter this weekend.  And we all know that at Easter, we celebrate rebirth and  renewal after a period of spiritual cleansing.   

During this Full Moon in Libra, you will make this your cause -  You will resolve to release, cleanse and declutter that entire emotional gunk to embrace new perspectives on love and interpersonal relationships.  Yes!  You will cut the cords to negative and toxic relationships that had weighed you down for a long time. Instead, you will focus on maintaining positive relationships.  As you attempt to unveil the sunshine behind the cloud of past relationship issues, remember that the way to do so is not through readjusting your thoughts about these relationships but to  approach it from the heart.  That means, whatever you need to say to people who had hurt you before, be prepared to seek emotional closure by saying what you need to say with feeling and from the heart so that you can move on.  Similarly, with whom you hope to manifest the type of positive relationship that you want, approach it with heart energy and express how you feel with authenticity.

Be conscious about using too much mind energy to analyze the ”why, when and what for” of a past relationship issue, wasting time rationalizing what needs to happen or should have happened.  Instead,  you should be guided by your heart, to muster courage and resolve to remove your ego, so that you can let it all go. 

Today is also governed numerologically by the  number 8. The energy of an 8 day will inspire you to make big and bold decisions.  So harness this energy to courageously make that bold decision to let go of the past so that you can embark on a new beginning towards better and more harmonious relationships in the future.

Renewing Relationships On The Advice Of The King Of Cups

Our wrangler Joanne Sprott had been kind enough to get out of the usual clichéd theme of balance which was often expected in any write-up about the festival of Ostara.  Ostara was often associated with balance because it was a festival that marked the vernal equinox where day and night were equal in duration.  Instead, she had asked us to focus on the theme of renewal.  This was apt simply because many of my friends across the world had been suffering from a protracted winter, and some had also experienced severe winter storms, floods and torrential rains.  Ostara, was truly about renewal, especially when it welcomes the first glimpse of Spring.  

As I am a Roman Catholic, I was in the Lenten period preparing for the celebration of Easter.  During mass last Sunday, the priest, in his sermon asked the congregation, "In preparation for Easter, what aspects of your life needs renewing?"  That had set me thinking, and I believed it was the Universe' way of guiding me as I wrote this blog post.

Ostara And Easter

My Pagan friends around the world celebrated the festival of Ostara by honoring the Goddess Eostre. She was the Goddess of fertility, Spring and renewal. I had discovered through my research that there were many myths surrounding Eostre.  One of them was that she travelled throughout the lands with a white rabbit as a companion, to bring life to dying plants and they put coloured eggs all over the fields in the process.  Anglo- Saxons during the festival offered coloured eggs to her.  This brought me then to the topic of Easter and it explained to me why children all over the world celebrated Easter with painted eggs and chocolates, and were either gifted with an Easter bunny made out of chocolates or dressed themselves up as Easter bunnies at Easter parties.

Ostara fell on 21 March when I would be mid way through my Lenten celebrations.  My Catholic friends, family and I, had been preparing for the coming Easter celebrations in April.  In many ways, whatever the co-relation I had read about Ostara and Easter in the past without getting into an argument reserved for kindergarten kids about which festival came first,  Easter, like Ostara was also the celebration of renewal and rebirth when Jesus Christ rose from the dead.  As I had been shaped through experience to be  extremely opened about different religious and cultural beliefs, Ostara to me, came as an early Easter celebration for me.  Hey, you know me, I am up for anything that called for a celebration.

More importantly, this particular Tarot Blog Hop had a special meaning for me because in preparation for Easter, I was in the process of letting go and forgiving past hurts, making up for my own faults and failures, and moving on to reconnect with those who had crossed me and whom I had crossed too. 

The topic of this Ostara Tarot Blog Hop -  RENEWAL -  was timely.  

The King Of Cups Reversed

As Ostara or Easter celebrated renewal and rebirth, I picked a Tarot card to look at what aspect of my life needed renewing most.  The King of Cups Reversed showed up to gently remind me about not one but several aspects of my life that were governed by the King.

The King of Cups in Tarot was a figure of emotional maturity, compassionate and nurturing leadership, and the balance of  mind and heart. He was the epitome of quiet strength. Honestly, I could not identify with this King.  What a softee!  Astrologically, my Sun sign was that of the fiery Leo, which was represented by the energetic, passionate, bold and confident King of Wands.  Nothing stood in my way of getting what I wanted, and nothing scared me.

The reversed King of Cups represented one who had allowed one’s emotions to control  one’s  life or had been responding in a “knee-jerk” fashion to how others might perceive him or her. Sometimes, this reversed King might fall into extreme mood swings, causing everyone around him or her to be confused, not knowing when he or she might blow up into an emotional volcanic eruption.

Renewing Relationships This Spring

I turned the reversed King of Cups card around, and started meditating on the card image.  I heard a soft whisper from the King and the touch of his gentle hand as he spoke.  He asked one question, “ As you grow your spirituality and start living a heart-centred life, how will you  manage life with the same heart-centredness in your capacity as mother, wife, daughter, manager to your team at work, direct report to your boss at work and business owner of Sun Goddess Tarot?”

The path before me that was filled with so many sharp bends and perilous bumps suddenly became quite clear.  I had been truly acting like the reversed King of Cups  recently with the stress of juggling multiple commitments in my multiple roles in recent months.  At home, I was an Ogre about to be dragged for his annual bath.  I often came home exhausted after a long day of work and several Tarot reading appointments or events.  At work, I was often on edge and growled at everyone whenever a project hit a snag or the boss questioned my decisions.  

With Sun Goddess Tarot, I often worry excessively about managing the mounting pressures on my time because of the numerous business commitments to my clients, and my business partners. I have got workshops, events, private and group classes and readings lined up for the next two months which from time to time, put me in a reversed 2 of Pentacles situation because I had over-stretched myself due to my inability to say no.  I often thought that as Tarot reader, mentor, and teacher, I had to always be there for my clients and proteges no matter the circumstance because I felt obligated to offer them help and support with my intuitive gifts.  However, at times, the back to back appointments and my inability to find time to ground myself in between would put a severe drain on my energy.  When I felt that I could not give 100% to my role as a light worker, I would get terribly upset and my confidence  level would take a nose-dive.

Turning The Reversed King Of Cups Around

Acknowledging the issues at hand, I resolved to turn the reversed King around.  With the multiple demands on my time and energy by my family, my colleagues and my clients, the one thing that they looked to me for was to manage these demands with a balanced heart and mind.  

Years ago, when I found my calling as a Tarot reader, Numerologist and Astrologer,  I had been channelling my inner Sun Goddess to help, guide and support everyone around me with positivity and genuine heart-centredness.  How can I aim to deliver positivity and genuine heart-centredness without having a balanced heart and mind? 

So this Spring, I am committed to renewing my relationships with my husband, my son, my colleagues, my boss and my clients.   Like the King of Cups, I promised to hold their hands through each and every challenge they might face by spending time with them to listen to their daily issues with a compassionate heart, and provide them with the right advice without judgement.

I was grateful for that reminder by the King of Cups, to always lead a heart-centred life.

Cosmic Sparks On Valentine's Day

Blessed Full Moon and a Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!  For those who had been celebrating the Lunar New Year of the Horse in the last 2 weeks, today marks the 15^th and final day of the Lunar New Year celebrations.  When I was very young, Mum used to tell me that the 15^th day of the Lunar New Year was the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day. Young Chinese maidens looking for a soulmate would throw tangerines down the river in the hope of seeing the reflection of their future husbands in the water.   I did that when I was a young and slightly cherubic teenager looking for a boyfriend.  The cop on his bicycle nearby stopped me in my tracks and warned me that he would give me a ticket for littering if I did not get on my way.  So I never got to see who my future husband was then….hmmm…if only I was prepared for who he is now. (Just kidding, honey!)


Full Moon In Leo

Now, back to the topic at hand.  Astrologically, the Full Moon sits in Leo today, while the Sun sits in Aquarius.  Dynamic energy all around!   With the Full Moon in Leo, you are encouraged to embrace life with energy and optimism.  Pursue that person who has a special place in your heart, with enthusiasm and passion.  If you are single, go ahead and chat up that girl who lives across the street whom you had been eyeing, or ask that good looking bloke in the office out for a drink.  Yes it is a Friday!, Why not make it an early after-work drink!.  If you are in a relationship, let your sense of spontaneity take you on an adventurous ride full of rich experiences with your other half.  Do something different, Go somewhere different.  Woo her differently and surprise her.

Sun In Aquarius

With the Sun in Aquarius, you might be working on plans to woo and surprise her, or write and re-write your chat-up lines.  However, when it comes to really doing it, you might spend more time scrambling for that piece of paper in your sweaty palms, or rehearsing your lines in the closet than actually doing it!   You might be thinking on one hand, you would love to sweep her up to give her the biggest kiss ever, but that little nagging thing in your head is stopping you just in case she mistook your gesture for you asking for her hand in marriage!

Mercury Retrograde

To make matters worse, when you have finally summoned your courage to whisper that sweet nothing in her ear, you might address her in the name of your ex-girlfriend.  When you send her that beautiful bouquet of red roses, there might be a possibility that the delivery man might make a mistake with her home address.  When you hold her hands and tell her “Darling, would you like to have a vegetarian dinner tonight?”  She might burst into tears thinking that you are hinting that she is fat.

Day 5 in Numerology

Numerologically, today is governed by 5.  Being overly partial to numerology, here is my advice.  The vibrational energy of day 5 is encouraging you to just go with the flow. No one can fault you for your spontaneity.  Even a home-prepared picnic at the park while watching kids fly their kites in the evening, can be so romantic.   If the relationship is newish, take on challenges with courage.  Treat each circumstance as an opportunity presented by the Universe.  Life and Love equally will always have risks.  Instead of focusing on the risks, think of these as an adventurous journey of growth.

The Workplace Relationship Spread

Managing Relationships With Colleagues At Work

In the first week of the New Year, I was inundated by Tarot reading appointments with the bulk of the questions heavily weighted on career and workplace relationships.  Questions range from “Should I look for a new job in the new year?”, “What’s my new boss like?”, “How will my role in this job pan out this year?” 

However, the most interesting question I got yesterday was, “What’s the outcome of my working relationship with a colleague in the New Year?”  It was interesting to me because my client sought advice from my Tarot cards in a bid to proactively find ways to improve her relationship with her colleague this New Year.

To me, interpersonal relationships between colleagues are hardest to manage.  A work environment is often made more challenging by differences in personalities, attitudes, goals and personal agendas amongst colleagues.  The relationship dynamics that govern day-to-day interactions may be even more volatile when they are driven by an undercurrent of misperceptions, prejudices and lack of trust and communication.

So I created a spread to help her through her situation and I call this, “The Workplace Relationship Spread”. Please don’t be mistaken.  This spread is not suitable for questions with regard to romantic relationships in the workplace.  When you use this spread, the intent has to be purely focused on work-related relationships between colleagues.

The Workplace Relationship Spread

1) How was my relationship with my colleague last year?

2) What factors, internal or external, influenced my relationship with him/her last year?

3)  How will my relationship with my colleague pan out this year?

4) What factors, internal or external, will influence my relationship with him/her this year?

5) What is he/she thinking about this relationship?

6) What can I do to help foster a better working relationship?

7) What would be the outcome of the relationship throughout the year?

The Spread In Practice

For the purpose of explaining the interpretation of this spread without revealing the real names involved in this spread, my client shall be addressed as Brenda and her colleague shall be addressed as Corinne. For this spread, I used the Morgan Greer deck.

1) How was my relationship with my colleague last year? – Knight of Swords

The Knight of Swords is a manifestation of my client’s colleague, Corinne, who was newly hired into the team last year, to help manage a rather big and complex project.  She brought with her a lot of enthusiasm and ambition to get the project off the ground, and not allowing anything or anyone to stand in her way of progress.  She’s very assertive about how she wants the project to be run, sometimes to the point of cutting my client, Brenda, out of the whole discussion process.  Corinne is so determined to achieve her goals and targets with this project that she had unwittingly trampled on many colleagues along the way, including Brenda, creating a measure of gradually increasing tension between them throughout last year.

2) What factors, internal or external, influenced my relationship with him/her last year? – 4 of Swords Reversed

The 4 of Swords Reversed is an interesting card to pick for this question because I gleaned more than 1 insight with it.  When Corinne first joined the team, she was so enthusiastic about the project that she wanted to do everything all at once.  She wanted to take on every aspect of the project regardless of whether she had skills and expertise to manage it.   She wanted full control of how the project was to be run even when there were multiple interdependencies within the project that required the cross-functional expertise of several team members within the company.

At the same time, the 4 of Swords Reversed is also a reflection of the frustrations everyone in the team felt due to the delays and stagnation of some aspects of that project.  The project proved very difficult to get off the ground, and the tension between team members mounted.

3)  How will my relationship with my colleague pan out this year? – 7 of Swords Reversed

Both Brenda and Corinne are very strong-headed.  This year, their relationship might prove equally challenging as they aren’t prepared to steer the relationship in a new direction. There is a lot of mistrust between them, and they are trying to absolve themselves from responsibility for any negative outcomes that may emerge along the way as they work on that project together.  If this state of affairs isn’t arrested, the situation might end up ultimately with exasperation, blame, finger-pointing, and unnecessary politicking.

 4) What factors, internal or external, will influence my relationship with him/her this year? – The Moon

Every time I pick the Moon in a reading, it brings out the topic of Carl Jung’s “Shadow Self” which I wrote a blog post about in http://sungoddesstarot.blogspot.sg/2012/10/Samhain-Shadow.html?m=1 . The Moon represents our shadow selves, an aspect of us that we often try to hide in the closet, out of fear of the negative opinions of others perhaps.  So between Brenda and Corinne, the Moon represents a murky situation made even murkier by both their attempts to suppress their shadow selves, be it their lack of confidence, their lack of skill sets in certain areas of their work, or their fear of being judged.

With these fears, they will always consciously put up a wall between themselves and not allow the relationship to steer to a better place through mutual understanding, support and opened communication.

5) What is he/she thinking about this relationship? – The Devil

The Devil is a representation of Corinne and her fear in letting go.  She is obsessed about controlling the project and she wants to be seen as having the expertise to manage this project just because she was specially hired for it.  There are hidden forces of negativity influencing Corinne’s thoughts about the relationship and restricting her from being more openly communicative. Corinne’s shadow self is her lack of confidence and her fear of showing it.  She’s not completely sure she can achieve her targets for the project on her own, yet she daren’t ask for help.  For one, Corinne thought of Brenda as a team member with an army of support while she hadn’t and  that started her off with the project at a disadvantaged position anyway.  She thought Brenda’s experience over the years made her arrogant and uncooperative.  She felt Brenda wanted to assert her role over the project and claim ownership of it.  Corinne feared that by openly sharing too much information about the project with Brenda, the latter might use it to jeopardize Corinne’s position. As the saying goes, “What a web we weave!”

6) What can I do to help foster a better working relationship? – Page of Swords Reversed

When Brenda sought advice from me, she had a genuine desire to make things work this year.  I picked the Page of Swords Reversed which advised Brenda to walk the talk on her desire to help with the project, and don’t be too hasty to judge Corinne and her capabilities.  Brenda knew she was good at what she did and that she could play an invaluable part in shaping the success of the project.  Instead of standing aside as a spectator criticizing everything about the project and everything Corinne did for the project, perhaps Brenda could step up and proactively volunteer to help push the project forward. Yes, she should step up and truly work with Brenda together as a team, leveraging off each other’s strengths.

The card also advised Brenda to not make decisions hastily or not be too curt and say anything offensive without thinking. The relationship is tenuous and required a lot of sensitivity in managing it.  Any negative opinions expressed in haste, would be taken wrongly by Corinne.

7) What would be the outcome of the relationship throughout the year when I deploy efforts to help foster a closer working relationship? – 5 of Wands

The 5 of Wands is a reflection of the differences in opinions, attitudes, and approaches to the project that will add to the tension between both parties.   They are nothing an opened and honest discussion couldn’t solve.  If there is need to lock the both of them in a room to resolve their differences, then perhaps that should be something they should consider doing to move the relationship forward in a more productive manner.

8)  Advice - Temperance

Temperance is a great advice equally for Brenda as it is for Corinne.  It’s a card advising them to manage each other’s differences with patience and persistence.   Brenda needs to aim to bring some harmonious balance back into the relationship with Corinne and ensure that she manages her with a measure of calm and collected disposition.  Brenda needs to accept that the work environment now has a new team armed with their own unique expertise and tasked to run a new project.  She needs to adapt to that new situation, and find some synergies with the new team, and work together towards delivering the project goals successfully.

It Takes Two Hands To Clap

Like all relationships, interpersonal relationships between colleagues can get quite tricky.  Communicating openly and honestly with one another helps the day to day interaction at work, but more importantly, it’s okay to accept that trust takes time and trust needs to be earned.  And it’s necessary to give others a chance to earn that trust.
